As it has already been told, format JPEG provides various levels of compression in the ratio volume/quality. The format most approaches for full color photographic images and approaches for small color set as in this case won’t give high compression less. Compression JPEG is oriented on a singularity of visual acceptability of the image. Blur, mixing of similar colors, join of the similar pixels which are nearby from each other is possible. This singularity of a format badly approaches for schedules, tables or images with thin details.

One of the oldest graphic formats GIF has explicit restriction on image quality – the palette in 256 colors hardly will approach for photos. But the applied compression scheme well approaches for any technical images. It is very convenient to use format GIF for schedules, buttons, thin elements of design, and the big circuits.

One of favorable differences of GIF from JPEG is the color of transparency. In a palette it is possible to reserve one color for a designation of color which will be used as “invisible” (that is, the background under a picture if it is supported by the display program). However application of color of a transparency is restricted, as there is no possibility of the job of the partial transparency. It is impossible to create pixels which will be, for example, translucent. Thus, GIF is convenient for display of elements of design.

Initially GIF has been restricted by the license right; its owners have restricted format propagation. For this reason and because of restrictions the analog and the continuer of idea of this format PNG has been created. Thanks to the palette extension, there was a possibility of usage of a high-grade drawing. Thus there are two varieties of a format, with a palette in 8 (analog GIF) and with a palette in 24 bits (full color). It is necessary to be careful at usage of this format in elements of design of a site as its palette can appear page incompatible with a palette and there will be a mismatch of colors.
